Ultra-sensitive, early fire detection sensor that sampled the ambient environment for volatile materials (fumes) released in the early stages of typical house fire scenarios.
OpTek assisted in the development of a ultra-sensitive, early fire detection sensor that sampled the ambient environment for volatile materials (fumes) released in the early stages of typical house fire scenarios.
Central to the development of the sensor was the processing of an optical fiber to create the precise geometries required to set up the whispering gallery mode resonator that provides the long interaction length between the sensing photons and the environment. This involved the processing of a 125µm optical fiber to produce a tapered section terminating in a spherical element at the tip.
This experimental sensing element demonstrates the exceptional flexibility and control of OpTek’s optical fiber processing capability.
